Merlier takes first road victory at 104th edition

Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix) won the first sprint of this year's Giro d'Italia in a bunch gallop into Novara. The Belgian beat European champion Giancomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka Assos) after a technical run into the finish. Elia Viviani (Cofidis) rounded out the podium in third. Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) and Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) finished fourth and fifth.

“I’m really happy, I’m really proud of it,” he said. “I was only thinking we need to be faster, faster, faster, Alex [Krieger] gave me a great lead-out. I went from far – 250m – it seemed a bit far, but it was a great victory.”

Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) remains safe in the pink jersey after a fairly straightforward stage for the sprinters to have their day.

“I sprinted (at the intermediate sprint) just for taking the seconds, not for the other jerseys but to take away time from the other leaders, and so to help Egan and Pavel in the GC in the next few days. If we take the jersey or not for three seconds, it will be worth it,” Ganna said.\n
