What a day in the mountains as the peloton tackled one of the most demanding stages of this year's Giro d'Italia. Stage 16 brought the riders from Sacile to Cortina d'Ampezzo, and it delivered drama from start to finish.
The breakaway was the story of the day, with a large group of riders getting clear of the peloton early on. The escapees worked well together as they faced a brutal parcours through the Dolomites, and it quickly became apparent that the overall contenders were content to let the move go, at least for the time being.
Lorenzo Fortunato was the standout performer on the day, the young Eolo-Kometa rider showing tremendous climbing ability to take a stunning solo victory. He attacked on the Passo di Giau, one of the most fearsome climbs in all of cycling, and rode away from his companions with impressive authority. Fortunato held on through the descent and the final kilometers into Cortina d'Ampezzo to claim what is surely the biggest win of his career so far.
Behind him, the battle for the general classification continued to simmer. Egan Bernal remains in the maglia rosa and looked composed once again, managing his rivals and keeping his overall lead intact. His Ineos Grenadieri teammates did a solid job of controlling any threats, and the Colombian continues to look like the strongest rider in the race heading into the final week.
The Dolomites provided a spectacular and brutal backdrop, and with more mountain stages still to come, this Giro is far from over.
