Race Recap
Vendrame wins Giro's longest stage
Andrea Vendrame (Ag2r Citroën Team) won stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia into Bagno di Romagna after attacking his breakaway companions on the final climb of the day. Chris Hamilton (Team DSM) was the only rider to follow the Italian but had to settle for second in the two-up sprint after 212km of racing from Siena to Bagno di Romagna.
“I'm super happy because I tried in 2019 but I was second and Chavez won that day, and I tried also last year but I was in a bad position,” Vendrame said. "I have been training hard this year and I made a dream come true. I'm really happy. We've been working to try to get the blue jersey for Bouchard and then in the finish we made it so I could try and get the victory."
Gianluca Brambilla (Trek-Segafredo) outsprinted George Bennett (Jumbo-Visma) for third place about 15 seconds behind, but the Italian was eventually relegated to fourth for sketchy maneuvers in the sprint against Bennett.
Egan Bernal was kept safe by his Ineos team on a hilly, tough stage that required focus from the entire peloton. Heading into tomorrow's pan-flat stage, he leads Aleksander Vlasov (Astana) by 45 seconds. Third is Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) at 1:12.
"There was a lot of elevation today and I think it was a really hard day for everyone," Bernal said. "We are happy because I finished well, but it was a really tough stage. They attacked in the uphill but we closed the gap because the moto was really close to them. We closed the gap really fast. Nibali attacked again on the downhill but we didn’t want to take the risk to follow him. I think we did well. We need a flat stage for sure. But sometimes these kind of stages are more difficult. Tomorrow we need to be focussed. This is a Grand Tour and for the GC guys there isn’t an easy day. You need to go full every day."
