Ganna wins opening time trial in Turin
Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) won the opening stage of the Giro d'Italia making him the first rider to win stage 1 in back-to-back years since Francesco Moser in 1986. The world champion beat the 8.6km course with a time of 8:47, building an incredible average speed of 58.7km. Edoardo Affini (Jumbo Visma) was second, 10 seconds slower than Ganna, and Tobias Foss finished third at 13 seconds.
"It’s been a lot of time that I wasn’t in the hot seat but I’m here and so I’m really happy," Ganna said. "Now we have to think to tomorrow and to recovery to start what will be a really hard Giro. I started with a small radio but I didn’t hear anything, so I told myself to go full gas and listen to the people along the road. If they cheered for me, then I knew I was going fast. That’s how I got this amazing victory. After Romandie, my morale was not too high, but now it's back and I’m really happy."
Ganna will wear the maglia rosa for stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia, a 179km flat race from Stupingi to Novara.
