Course Preview

The Giro d'Italia opens with an individual time trial of 8.6 kilometres in Turin. The route along the banks of the Po river is entirely flat.

The world time trial champion Filippo Ganna is the obvious favourite for the first maglia rosa. He won all three ITTs in last year’s Giro.

The course in central Turin is perfect for riders who can push a big gear. Starting from Piazza Castello, the route offers long straight stretches and finishes near the church of Gran Madre di Dio, at the foot of the Superga hill.

The intermediate time check appears after 3.7 kilometres in front of the Castello del Valentino.

Turin also hosted the Grande Partenza ten years ago. Team HTC-High Road won the team time trial, while Marco Pinotti was the first rider in pink.

The first rider starts at 14.00 and the last rider is expected to finish around 17.15 – both are local times (CEST).
