Race Recap
Van Aert wins Gent-Wevelgem
Wout Van Aert (Team Jumbo-Visma) claimed the 2021 Gent-Wevelgem, outsprinting his breakaway rivals in an exciting finale after 247km of racing over the famous cobbled climbs of Flanders. Giacomo Nizzolo (Team Qhubeka ASSOS) took second and Matteo Trentin (UAE-Team Emirates) was third.
“As a team, we have continuously focused on the wind and the echelons. You know that this is almost always the case in this race,” said Van Aert. “It soon broke open and I was in the right range with Nathan. We worked well together and kept control of the course. Of course, there was confidence in the final sprint. I encouraged Nathan all the time to survive Kemmelberg the last time. He did that. That was really super strong. I knew I was going to need him badly after that. In the last kilometer he still took the lead. That is really great class. Chapeau to him.”
Nathan Van Hooydonck (Team Jumbo-Visma) set Van Aert up for the sprint in perfect fashion, chasing down a dangerous move by TT specialist Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) in the closing kilometres and leading it out to the finish.
