Race Recap
Van der Breggen wins TT title
Anna van der Breggen (NED) powered to her first ever world championship jersey in the individual time trial after besting Marlen Ruesser (SWI) by 15 seconds on the 31.7km loop around Imola, Italy, starting and finishing on the famous Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. The decorated Dutch cyclist has finished runner up in the TT four times, and today was her day finally after 51 riders took the start. Her teammate, Ellen van Dijk was third place, 31 seconds back.
Defending champion Chloe Dygert was setting a time that looked to have her set up to take the world title yet again, however she lost control around a tight corner and flew over a road barrier. The crash forced the US rider to abandon the race.
Amongst the early starters, Emma Norsgaard (Denmark) set the time to beat at 41:42. Her time stood strong for a long time, until Grace Brown smashed the route and finished 20.92 seconds faster. From there Van Dijk replaced her in the hot seat after finishing 29 seconds faster, but quickly the Swiss national champion, Marlen Reusser (SWI) took her spot. It was Van der Breggen's race to lose at that point, and the Dutch rider didn't lose her cool, finishing 16 seconds faster than Reusser.
Worlds coverage continues tomorrow with the elite men's time trial, starting at 1430 CEST.
