What a stunning ride from Filippo Ganna to claim the rainbow jersey in the men's elite time trial here in Imola today. The Italian was simply imperious, producing a performance that left his rivals trailing in his wake and had the Italian crowd in raptures despite the restricted spectator numbers.
Ganna, riding for Ineos Grenadiers, set a blistering time on the challenging parcours that wound its way through the Emilia-Romagna countryside and finished with the punishing climb to the finish line. The course suited the big Italian perfectly, and he delivered when it mattered most, emphatically announcing himself as one of the very best time trialists in the world.
Rohan Dennis was looking for redemption after his controversial abandonment at last year's worlds, and the Australian did ride strongly to take the silver medal, confirming that he remains among the elite in this discipline. Tom Dumoulin, returning to racing after an extended mental health break, showed enormous courage and class to claim the bronze, a result that was greeted with widespread admiration across the peloton and beyond.
For Ganna, this is a crowning moment in what has already been a remarkable season. The 24-year-old dominated the time trials at this year's Giro d'Italia and has now backed that up with the biggest prize in the sport. His power and his remarkably aerodynamic position on the bike make him a frightening prospect for rivals in the years to come. The rainbow jersey looks very much at home on those enormous shoulders.
