Woods wins stage 7 of the Vuelta
Michael Woods (EF Pro Cycling) won stage 7 of the Vuelta a Espana after a blistering acceleration on the final climb up the category 1 Puerto de Orduña. The Canadian outkicked Omar Fraile (Astana) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) to take his second win Vuelta victory.
“It’s the climb where I test myself and I knew it perfectly," said Fraile, who took second on the day. "I knew the stage was going to be difficult when I saw the breakaway. But being up there and with great legs, I knew it was possible. At first, we worked well together, then Woods was saying Carthy is in the fight for GC and Valverde was there. That doesn’t make sense because in the end we gained a minute and it wasn’t going to make much of a difference. He played his cards and it worked well. I tried to follow the wheels to protect Aranburu’s options in the chasing group. And when Woods went, I thought Valverde would follow and I would win afterward but it didn’t work out.”
Richard Carapaz played his cards right to successfully retain the red jersey as race leader for another day after his Ineos team warded off the pressure from Jumbo Visma and Movistar. The Ecuadorian is 18 seconds ahead of Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling). Dan Martin is third, at 20 seconds.
