Carthy wins on the L’Angliru

Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) took the biggest win of his career today on the Alto de L’Angliru after conquering the vicious slopes of 23.5 percent and winning with 16 seconds ahead of Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana) and Enric Mas (Movistar) and Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers).

“It’s a dream come true to win any race. But to win in a Grand Tour, on a mythical climb, it doesn’t get any better than that. It’s hard to put into words. It’s exciting. We have a close race going into the time-trial. Everything is still to play for,” Carthy said.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) conceded 10 seconds to Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) and had to turn over the red jersey during the 12 km ascent that reached an incredible 1560 metres.

“This climb made a natural selection. We already spent a lot of energy yesterday. And it was a very hard stage today. I remembered it from 2017 but it’s been incredible. I tried in the end, Mas and Carthy also went for it and I continued with my pace and that gave me a 10’’ advantage. That’s great for us, we’re going towards the time-trial with the idea to give our best and defend the leadership. I’m very happy to wear [La Roja] again. It’s a good thing for me, for the team, and for everything we’ve been doing.”

However, Roglic will be looking forward to the upcoming rest day, then the chance for redemption on the time trial the next day, which is a 33.7km route from Muros to Mirador de Ézaro.\n \nPrimoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma): “It was too hard a climb for a sprinter. I didn’t have the best day but in the end, it’s ok. I’m happy with this result and we go on with the time-trial on Tuesday. It will be a hard one. I will do my best and we’ll see how things are after the time-trial.”
