Race Recap
Gaudu wins stage 11
David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) was filled with joy as he crossed the line in first place today in Asturias at the Vuelta a Espana. The 170km stage went over a series of hard category 1 climbs, culminating on the Farrapona with the remnants of the breakaway battling it out a couple of minutes ahead of the GC contenders.
"I screamed because I was relieved," said Gaudu after the stage. "The legs hurt in the past few days. I was complaining that it wasn’t going so well and this has been a complicated season. We struggled at the Tour de France and we came to La Vuelta to be more ambitious.
The young Groupama FDJ rider took stage 11 ahead of Marc Soler on Alto de la Farrapona after attacking the steep rise to the finish.
“It was our plan, to have Marc [Soler] at the front so he can try to win the stage and gain some time on GC," Enric Mas said. "I felt very good myself. It was a very fast start and then I had great sensations so I was able to sprint with the fast guys who had been just a notch above me in the past occasions. Tomorrow is very open, with a short stage that can open differences.”
Back in the GC group, the standings remain unchanged. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) finished close together and are still tied on GC. However, that tie won't last for long, as the Angliru climb is the next mountain test on the menu.
