What a day in the Italian lakes region. The 2020 Tour of Lombardy has come to a close and it was Jakob Fuglsang of Astana who took the victory on this stunning autumn afternoon, claiming his first Monument title at the race known as the Race of the Falling Leaves.
The Danish rider timed his effort to perfection on the final climb of San Fermo della Battaglia, attacking from a select lead group and riding clear to solo across the finish line in Como with enough time to celebrate in style. It was a masterful display of climbing and tactical intelligence from the 35-year-old, who has shown strong form throughout this truncated and compressed racing season.
Behind Fuglsang, the race for the remaining podium positions was fierce. Alexey Lutsenko, his Astana teammate, came in to claim a remarkable second place, making it a wonderful double for the Kazakh outfit. It was a brilliant team performance that saw Astana control much of the crucial final hour of racing. David Gaudu rounded out the podium in third place for Groupama-FDJ, a fine result for the young Frenchman and further evidence of his growing credentials as a classics contender.
Several favorites struggled to make an impact on what turned out to be a demanding and relentless route through the Lombardy countryside. The peloton was whittled down steadily across the climbs, and by the time the race reached its decisive phase only the strongest riders remained at the front.
Fuglsang takes a richly deserved Monument victory today.
