Course Preview

The Barossa Valley hosts the 1st stage on the Tour Down Under. At 150 kilometers, the race is likely to see a sprint finish in Tanunda.

The race consists of five laps with start and finish in Tanunda. The 30 kilometres circuit connect Bethany, Angaston, Penrice and Nuriootpa. The only elevation gain that’s interesting enough to award KOM points is at Breakneck Hill Road in Angaston. It is a short ascent at 7.2% with mountain points only available in the second and the fourth round.

Last year’s 1st stage saw a sprint finish in Port Adelaide. Elia Viviani outgunned Max Walscheid and Jakub Mareczko on the line. The only other pure bunch sprint was won by young Jasper Philipsen after Caleb Ewan had been relegated.

Two intermediate sprints – at kilometre 15 and kilometre 75 – come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds each, while the first three riders one the line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

The 1st stage of the Tour Down Under starts at 11.00 and the expected finish is at 14.45 – both are local times.
