The peloton heads to South Australia for the first WorldTour race of the 2020 season, with the Santos Tour Down Under once again providing the ideal warm-weather curtain raiser to what promises to be a thrilling year of racing. The race takes place across six stages from the 21st to the 26th of January, with Adelaide once again serving as the heart of the event and the iconic Willunga Hill climb likely to play a decisive role in determining the overall winner.
Defending champion DarylImpey returns to South Australia with Israel Start-Up Nation looking to become the first rider to win the race in consecutive years since Rohan Dennis claimed back-to-back victories in 2015 and 2016. The South African veteran knows the roads well and will be a dangerous presence throughout the week.
All eyes will be on Richie Porte, who rides for Trek-Segafredo and who has long been considered one of the best riders at this race given his exceptional climbing ability and his familiarity with the local roads. The Tasmanian is always motivated at this event and will be looking to finally claim a title that has so far eluded him despite several strong performances.
Simon Yates arrives with Mitchelton-Scott carrying significant expectations after a strong 2019 campaign. The young British climber has the ability to hurt his rivals on the tougher terrain and will be well supported by a strong team that knows how to race in Australian conditions.
Elia Viviani and Caleb Ewan will target stage victories in the sprints, while the climbing stages will sort the overall contenders from the pretenders.
