Stage 8 of the 2020 Tour de Suisse is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
What a dramatic conclusion to this year's Tour de Suisse. Stage 8 brought the race to a thrilling finale atop the Chamrousse, and it was Richard Carapaz who proved strongest on the final climb, attacking his rivals with a devastating surge to take the stage victory and with it the overall general classification lead.
The Ecuadorian climber, riding for Ineos Grenadiers, timed his move to perfection, launching his decisive acceleration in the closing kilometres of the ascent and opening up a gap that none of his rivals could close. His victory was a powerful statement of climbing form heading into the final stage.
Rohan Dennis had done tremendous work in service of the team throughout the day, and the Ineos Grenadiers once again demonstrated their strength as a collective unit. Behind Carapaz, the remaining overall contenders scrambled to limit their losses, with time gaps opening up among the favourites on the steep gradients of the final climb.
Sergio Higuita put in a strong performance to follow Carapaz home and showed that the young Colombian continues to develop into a genuine stage race threat. The battle for the podium positions remained tightly contested, with several riders separated by only small margins.
With just the final stage remaining, Carapaz now holds a commanding enough position to feel confident about securing the overall Tour de Suisse title, giving him and his Ineos Grenadiers squad enormous confidence and momentum as the racing season continues.
