What a day in the Swiss mountains as the 2020 Tour de Suisse reached its penultimate stage and the race exploded in spectacular fashion on the roads leading to Villars-sur-Ollon.
From the neutralized start, it was clear that the peloton knew the stakes were high with the overall classification still very much up for grabs. The breakaway of the day got clear in the early kilometers and built up a reasonable advantage, but with the final climb looming large, the bunch was never going to let things get out of hand.
As the race hit the decisive ascent to the finish, the leading general classification contenders began to make their moves. The climb proved brutally selective, shredding the peloton into small groups and leaving only the strongest riders at the front. Attack followed attack on the upper slopes as riders sought to gain crucial seconds ahead of the final stage time trial.
Marc Hirschi, the young Swiss talent riding for Team Sunweb, showed tremendous form throughout the week and was once again a dangerous presence, while the overall contenders kept a watchful eye on each other. The GC battle remained tight with seconds separating the top riders as they crossed the line.
The stage came down to a thrilling finale at altitude, with the result shaking up the standings and setting up what promises to be a fascinating conclusion to the race in the final stage time trial, where the overall winner of this year's Tour de Suisse will ultimately be decided.
