What a dramatic day in the mountains as the peloton tackled one of the most challenging stages of this year's Tour de Suisse. The day featured significant climbing and the general classification contenders were finally forced to show their hands.
The stage saw early attacks from the breakaway group as several riders eager to take the stage win pushed clear of the main field in the opening kilometres. The peloton was content to let the move go, with the gap swelling to several minutes at various points throughout the day, though the teams of the overall contenders kept a watchful eye on proceedings and ensured things never got completely out of hand.
As the race hit the final and decisive climb of the day, the situation changed dramatically. The pace lifted sharply and the peloton began to splinter, with riders unable to hold the tempo being shed off the back one by one. The favorites moved to the front and the real battle for the stage and for time in the general classification began in earnest.
Marc Hirschi put in a particularly impressive performance, showing the kind of attacking riding that has made him one of the most exciting young talents in the peloton. The climbing tested everyone's legs severely and only the strongest were able to stay in contention as the stage reached its conclusion.
The result has shuffled the overall standings and sets up what promises to be a fascinating final portion of racing here in Switzerland, with several riders still very much in contention for the final overall victory.
