What a dramatic day in the Swiss mountains as stage 3 of the 2020 Tour de Suisse has come to a conclusion. The peloton faced a challenging parcours today that tested the riders both physically and tactically, and we witnessed some exceptional racing from start to finish.
A breakaway group formed early in the stage, with a handful of ambitious riders seizing the initiative and pushing clear of the main peloton. The escapees worked well together and built up a reasonable lead as the race wound its way through the Swiss countryside, but the peloton kept the situation under control and never allowed the gap to grow to a dangerous level.
As the race entered its final phase, the bunch reeled in the breakaway and the stage was set for a fierce battle among the sprinters and the puncheurs. Marc Hirschi of Team Sunweb put in a stunning performance on the day, showing his class and his ability to read a race perfectly. The young Swiss rider, racing in front of his home fans, demonstrated exactly why he is considered one of the most exciting talents in the peloton right now.
The finish saw some aggressive racing and Hirschi proved to be the strongest on the day, taking a hugely popular victory that sent the Swiss cycling community into raptures. It was a moment of real joy for the home fans and a statement of intent from Hirschi as the race continues through his homeland.
The general classification picture has also shifted slightly as a result of today's outcome, and the coming stages promise more fireworks as the overall contenders begin to measure each other up in earnest.
