Quintana wins final stage of Paris Nice
Schachmann seals overall
Quintana won the final stage of Paris-Nice in style after attacking on the last ascent to La Colmiane Saturday. No one could stay with Colombian climber, who looked to have a new lease on life after switching to his new Arkea Samsic team. Tiesj Benoot (Sunweb) finished second and Tibaud Pinot (Groupama FDJ) took third on the day.
“I always try to win stages with some elegance,” Quintana said after the stage. “The team worked a lot to make it back on the break and then I did what I had to do. There was nothing I could do for the GC. I crashed badly and l lost too much time that day. Day after day I finished with the best and I wanted to win before the race ended to bring a little joy to this team and this is a gift for the whole team for the job done. Now I’m going to go back to Colombia to stay with my family.”
It wasn’t the easiest end to the 78th edition of the Race to the Sun, but Schachmann held onto his yellow jersey in courageous fashion, despite challenges from Tiesj Benoot (Sunweb) to topple the German’s lead in the final 16km. Sergio Higuita (EF Pro Cycling) finished third overall and took home the best young rider jersey by a significant margin.
“It was very, very hard,” Schachmann said. “I think you saw Konrad, and Schwarzmann and Grosschartner controlled the race for me but it was really hard at the finish. The last three kilometres were a walk through hell, through pain. Now it’s like being in heaven and it erases all the pain in my legs. It’s not my first success but the biggest so far and the most important because a whole lot of people doubted that I could be a GC rider. Now I won the most prestigious one-week race.”\n
