Race Recap

What a day on the roads of northern Italy. After months of uncertainty and a delayed start to the season due to the pandemic, La Classicissima finally got its moment, and it delivered a finish worthy of the wait.

Wout van Aert of Jumbo-Visma took the victory in a sprint finish on the Via Roma, outpowering a small group of elite riders to claim his first monument victory. The Belgian all-rounder showed his extraordinary versatility once again, proving that he belongs among the very best in the world.

The race played out in dramatic fashion over the final climbs. The Cipressa and the iconic Poggio di San Remo were where the real action unfolded, as attacks flew from multiple directions. Julian Alaphilippe, the defending champion, was once again a central figure and looked threatening throughout the final kilometres. Peter Sagan, always dangerous in these situations, was also present and in contention as the group crested the Poggio.

The descent into San Remo saw the lead group remain together, setting up the sprint that many had anticipated. Van Aert timed his effort perfectly, unleashing his considerable sprint power at exactly the right moment. Alaphilippe and Søren Kragh Andersen rounded out the podium.

For van Aert, this is a massive victory that confirms what many have been saying for some time. He is simply one of the most complete riders of his generation, and today on the roads to San Remo, he proved it to the entire world.
