2020 Liège-Bastogne-Liège Race Preview
The details of this year's 2020 Liège-Bastogne-Liège are falling into place. Find the latest route profiles and maps below, followed by our strategic preview of the race.
The oldest of cycling's five monuments heads into its 106th edition with a field that looks as strong as any in recent memory, and the hilly roads of the Belgian Ardennes are set to provide the usual brutal examination of climbing ability and endurance that has defined this race since the nineteenth century.
The route covers around 257 kilometres from Liège to the finish in Liège itself, taking in a series of demanding climbs through the Walloon countryside. The traditional late-season brutal ascents including the Côte de la Redoute, the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons, and the punishing finale up the Côte de Saint-Nicolas will all play their part in whittling down the field before the race reaches its conclusion.
All eyes will be on Primož Roglič, who arrives in superb form following his dominant performance at the Vuelta a España and his overall victory at Critérium du Dauphiné. The Jumbo-Visma leader has been performing at an extraordinary level throughout this unusual pandemic-shortened season and will be among the clear favourites.
World champion Julian Alaphilippe will be eager to add a monument to his rainbow jersey, and the Frenchman's punchy climbing style suits the Ardennes terrain well, as he proved with his Flèche Wallonne victory earlier in the week.
Marc Hirschi has been one of the revelations of the season and the young Swiss rider will carry genuine podium ambitions. Alejandro Valverde, a five-time winner of this race, remains dangerous despite his age, while Tadej Pogačar, fresh from his astonishing Tour de France victory, arrives as a rider capable of anything on a day like this.
