Guerreiro wins stage 9

Ruben Guerreiro (EF Education First) claimed the queen stage of the 2020 Giro d'Italia after outsprinting Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers) in the final steep ramp to the finish line at the Roccaraso summit. The duo accelerated away from the eight-man breakaway on the penultimate climb and held off the tired chasers by 50 odd seconds. Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates) finished third.

“Finally, what a great satisfaction after so many second places," Guerreiro said. "The team and I really deserved this victory. It was very difficult to get into the breakaway this morning and it’s extraordinary to win today.”

“In professional cycling, it’s so hard to win. This is my fourth year as a professional and it feels incredible to take the win after such a hard day. I’m really cold and wet right now, but I know I will be warm soon. It’s amazing to take the second win for the team and I worked so much for this. It’s amazing.”

Fellow Portuguese countryman JoĂŁo Almeida successfully retained his pink jersey in the GC group, after no real fight to take it off his hands materialized. Deceuninck-QuickStep made light work of protecting their leader when his lead seemed threatened by Trek Segafedo, and Almeida will reap the benefits of carrying the maglia rosa into the rest day.

“I am so happy and very grateful to the whole team, because I wouldn’t have made it without them. I am delighted at the thought that I will start the second week of this beautiful race in the overall lead, it’s something I would have never imagined when the race got underway in Palermo, last Saturday”, Almeida said.
