Ganna motors to second Giro victory on stage 5\nBy Clara Beard

Over the dark, foggy category 1 Valico Montescuro, the reigning world time trial champion Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) showed a supreme display of power in an unlikely scenario. We all knew of his incredible ability as a tester and track pursuit specialist - his multiple world championship accolades speak for themselves. Today, the 24-year-old Italian transferred his skills to the hills and outclimbed his more diminutive breakaway companions to take a surprise win on in Camigliatello Silano on stage 5 of the 2020 Giro d'Italia.

“Yesterday I messaged Geraint Thomas and he said, 'Pippo, go in the breakaway, you should try as you can win another stage.’ And today, I tried and I managed to get this amazing victory for myself and the team. It is not easy to pull up 82kg up the climb. Also, there was a problem with the radio and I didn’t know the time gap to the other guys and after the climb, I had to time trial to the finish line.

“I just had to think 'Filippo, pull full gas’ to the finish.”

Ganna finished 34 seconds ahead of a select group of GC competitors. Patrick Konrad (Aut) Bora-Hansgrohe took second on the day and race leader JoĂŁo Almeida took third, his twisted face clear evidence of his effort in keeping pink in the Deceuninck - QuickStep camp.

At 225km, today's stage was the third longest of this year's edition of the Giro, and took a marathon six hours to complete. At the start, it was around 50km before the breakaway tore clear, and Jan Tratnik (Bahrain McLaren), Carl Frederik Hagen (Lotto Soudal), Ineos Grenadiers teammates Filippo Ganna and Salvatore Puccio, Valerio Conti (UAE Team Emirates), Hector Carretero (Movistar), Jhonathan Restrepo (Androni-Giocattoli-Sidermec) and Edoardo Zardini (Vini ZabĂą-Brado-KTM) made up the selection.

The eight riders drew out a max of about five minutes, while Deceuninck - QuickStep made sure the peloton rolled along at a steady clip. That was how the situation remained until the break reached the foot of the final climb, and the gradient caused almost immediately fracturing. Ganna climbed consistently on the 25 kilometre ascent, while his breakaway companions took turns attacking. Carretero, De Gendt and Rubio tried some accelerations, but none could unseat Ganna, who eventually powered away solo with five kilometres until the top of the climb. \n
