Geoghegan Hart wins penultimate stage

Tao Geoghegan Hart (IGD) won stage 20 of the 2020 Giro d'Italia today after a stellar performance by the INEOS team to get the 24-year-old within striking distance of the maglia rosa on the Sestriere today, matching Jai Hindley's (SUN) accelerations in the closing kilometres as they went mano y mano up the ascent.

"It was a spectacular day in the sun with an amazing team. We stuck to our plan and I think it went pretty well. I’m pretty happy. It was about finishing off the work the boys have done and I’m super happy to have done that," Geoghegan Hart said. "I felt good the whole way [up the final climb]. I was pretty focused on the bonus seconds at the end and my race. It’s a bike race. Anything can happen [tomorrow], especially after 20 days of racing in tough conditions. We’ll see how it goes – I’ll do my best and I can’t change anything beyond that."

Ineos' pace up Sestriere cracked Wilco Kelderman (SUN), who started the day in the pink jersey. He moved down to third on GC, while his teammate, Hindley, shot up into pink. In an unprecedented situation, Hindley is tied with Geoghegan Hart on GC before the final time trial tomorrow.

“I didn’t think it was possible, but here I am. It’s an incredible feeling,” Hindley said. “We had a plan with the team upfront today. If Wilco lost a certain amount of time I had the opportunity to go for it and try put time into Tao, which I tried to do. He was super strong and unfortunately I couldn’t put any time into him and it’s just the way it is. I really put it out there today but I just didn’t have it in the end but to go into the jersey, it’s massive.”\n
