Course Preview

A queen stage across the Alps, with a 5000 m vertical altitude gain. After the first 75 km, approaching the Western Alps, the route takes in 4 consecutive categorised climbs around and over 2000 m, linked without pause for breath. The peloton will tackle Colle dell’Agnello (2744 m), Col d’Izoard (2360) and Col de Montgenèvre (1854), heading for the finish in Sestriere (2035 m), climbing for nearly 55 km, with gradients between 6 and 8%, and peaks reaching 15% or more. The descents (totalling almost the same distance) are challenging and fast-running. All the roads are moderately wide, and well-surfaced.

The final kilometres are raced on the wide and well-paved ss. 23, with just a small roundabout 300 m before the finish. The home straight (250 m) is on 7 m wide tarmac.
