Cerny takes stage 19 win
After plenty of confusion at the start line, riders protesting the length and conditions of today’s stage were successful, and organizers modified the length – from 258km to 124km. Josef Černý (CCC Team) ended up on top, with a daring late attack out of the break of the day, which formed moments after the revised start.
“I still cannot believe it but it is a really nice feeling. I didn’t believe it until I was about 500 meters to go. I still had about 25-30 seconds in the last ten kilometres but it was a full headwind. I thought I could I could do it and I was pushing hard and now I’m here after crossing first in the finish line. It’s unbelievable. I cannot describe it, it was just incredible. I try so much and today, I have achieved my dream. I am really happy for my team, my family, and my girlfriend.”
Wilco Kelderman remains in the pink jersey, but only just. The race leader is 13 seconds ahead of his teammate, Jai Hindley, on GC. Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) is a further 15 seconds down before a huge day in the mountains scheduled tomorrow.
“It was a short stage today but I really enjoyed every moment in the pink jersey,” Kelderman said. “It’s something that I’ve been dreaming of my whole career so to be able to race a stage in the Giro with it on was incredible. The guys kept me and Jai safe throughout the day so we could save as much energy as possible. Tomorrow will be a tough stage but I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully, we can hold onto the pink jersey still.”\n
