Hindley wins queen stage
Jai Hindley took Team Sunweb to the next level at the Giro d'Italia today, winning stage 18 by outsprinting Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) after six hours of racing in the Italian Dolomites. Pello Bilbao (Bahrain McLaren) took third at Laghi di Cancano atop the Torri di Fraele, 45 seconds down.
“To get a win for the team it’s massive and a win for me personally, it’s a huge step forward in my career,” Hindley said. “I’m over the moon to take the win today. I’ve ridden around in this area a fair bit and I knew the climbs, it’s a stunning part of the world and yeah, it’s just amazing.”
The 207km mountain stage, featuring the Cima Coppi Stelvio climb as the penultimate test, was enough to unseat JoĂŁo Almeida (Deceuninck - QuickStep) as race leader. Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) has moved into the overall lead by just 12 seconds ahead of Hindley. Geoghegan Hart is third at 15 seconds.
“It was a crazy stage, I think it was the hardest day of my life,” Kelderman said. “It was a big fight all day but the stage win for Jai is super nice. We dropped Almeida on the Stelvio and from then the race was on. Ineos were super strong with two guys and I couldn’t hold onto them so I just had to race at my own pace behind. I was just counting down the kilometres and going full gas to the line. I’m happy with today, now we’ll recover and make plans and see what happens on the weekend. I think in the end it’s good we have two riders up there.”
