Race Recap
Geoghegan Hart wins stage 15
Tao Geoghegan Hart added to the stage win domination Ineos Grenadiers has been enjoying this edition of the Giro d'Italia with a win atop Piancavallo after attacking Sunweb duo Jai Hindley and Wilco Kelderman in the final moments of the climb.
“It’s been such an up and down race - we have an incredible Filippo Ganna, an equally incredible Rohan Dennis yesterday and Jhonny, who we're sad to lose to injury today, also won a stage in the break," Geoghegan Hart said. "I’m behind on GC, but I really wanted to win a stage. I’ve only won a few races in my career so this is something truly incredible for me.
“Crossing the line first was something truly incredible and this one was for Nico Portal - we lost him this spring and it’s been really difficult for the team I think. Not only that but all season we’ve had some great highs, but some big lows in the Tour, for me personally and also in this race."
Team Sunweb made their bid on the maglia rosa clear today, and with the aid of Hindley, Wilco Kelderman (SUN) dropped race leader JoĂŁo Almeida (DQT) quite decidedly on the final category one climb to Piancavallo. JoĂŁo Almeida (DQT) tried hard to limit his losses, but ended up conceding more than 30 seconds to Kelderman, who now sits in second by just 15 seconds. The effort by Sunweb pushed Hindley up to third on GC, 2'56" down.
“The team was incredible,” Kelderman said. “On the final climb everyone did their job. Jai did perfect work, super super strong. Too bad we couldn’t win the stage and fell just short for pink. But how we rode, it was super. I was on the limit towards the final, and we went full to the finish. It was a super hard day with narrow roads so controlling at the front was beneficial. I heard through radio that Almeida was in difficulty, but it wasn’t enough. He is just very strong. If you look at how we raced, it’s just super, also with Jai in third. It gives us a lot of confidence into the final week which will have a lot of uphill finishes. I feel super strong and the team feels super strong.”\n
