Race Recap
Ganna wins stage 14 time trial
Filippo Ganna (IGD) once again proved why he's current world individual time trial champion after winning the second Giro d'Italia time trial, from Conegliano to Valdobbiadene, by 26 seconds ahead of teammate, and former world champion, Rohan Dennis (IGD). Ganna powered over the lumpy 34.1 km course with a finishing time of 42:40, averaging 48 kph. Young American phenom Brandon McNulty (UAD) took an incredible third place, 1:09 down on Ganna's winning time.
"Every victory is important for me and in this Giro we have a really strong team we are winning from everywhere and we are really happy," Ganna said after the stage. "In the start I felt ok, we had a one kilometre climb, but it was five minutes of climbing and it was not easy, but once I got past the climb the legs felt good and as I got closer to the end they felt better and better. In the final week I hope the climbs will be sunny and not too cold - but the aim will be to save energy and recover well as there is still one more time trial remaining in Milan."
In the hunt for the maglia rosa, João Almeida (Deceuninck - QuickStep) had a stellar ride and opened up more distance between him and second place overall, Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb). The Portuguese phenom is now 56 seconds ahead before the upcoming mountain stages. Pello Bilbao (Bahrain McLaren) is third at 2'11".
Tomorrow's stage is going to be a difficult one, 4 out of 5 in its difficulty rating. There are three category 2 climbs before the final category 1 up to the ski resort area of Piancavallo. It's set to be another big challenge for João Almeida (Deceuninck - QuickStep) and the rest of the GC contenders. The stage begins at 11:05 a.m. CEST.
