Race Recap
Ulissi wins stage 13
Diego Ulissi (UAD) won stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia in a photo finish after a tough and fast finale into the finishing town of Monselice. The Italian was victorious with a bike throw over the maglia rosa JoĂŁo Almeida (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Patrick Konrad (Bora-Hansgrohe).
"We did a great job on the final climb to break away from the sprinters and arrive in a small group," Ulissi said. "We knew that if we could keep them away we would have a chance to fight for the sprint. I have to thank the whole team who set this up perfectly : first with Conti and then with a great lead out from McNulty who set me up in the final. Since we restarted the season I am going really well and I am so happy to have won two stages, which I can add to the my previous six wins here.”
JoĂŁo Almeida (DQT) took second and put a few more seconds into his maglia rosa lead.
“I want to begin by saying a big thank you to my teammates, who did an incredible job for me today, just like in the past two weeks," he said. "The group was quite small after the final descent, I had three guys with me and we planned to go for the stage win. They rode their heart out in the closing kilometers, we would have loved to win, but one guys was faster on the line. Overall, it was a good stage for us and we can be satisfied. We took another top 3, I gained some bonus seconds and we showed an incredible team spirit. It’s incredible to have the maglia rosa on my shoulders for the 11th consecutive day and this boosts my confidence ahead of the weekend.”
In the 192km stage from Cervina to Monselice was uncomplicated until the final 40km, where the riders would hit two Cat. 4 climbs in succession. The breakaway formed early on during the flatter portion of the stage, and Simon Pellaud, Simone Ravanelli (Androni Giocattoli–Sidermec), along with Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R La Mondiale), Rodrigo Contreras (Astana Pro Team), Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani CSF Faizane), Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Soudal), Lorenzo Rota (Vini Zabù–KTM) made up the break of the day.
The seven in the break were kept on a short leash of only two minutes and some change before eventually being reabsorbed on the two steep climbs before the finish. It was at that point the race exploded, and a small group of favorites fought for stage honors. \n
