Narváez wins stage 12

Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers) won a soggy and miserable stage 12 of the 2020 Giro d'Italia after spending almost the entire 204km off the front in the original breakaway. In the final 30km, Narvaez attacked with Mark Padun (Bahrain McLaren), but the Ukrainian suffered an ill-timed mechanical with 25km to go, and couldn't time trial back onto Narvaez's wheel in time to contest the finish.

At one point in the closing kilometres, Padun looked like he had enough in the tank to rejoin Narvaez, getting within touching distance of the Ineos rider at 10 seconds, but the task proved to be too much, and from there he began to slip back more and more, eventually finishing about 50 seconds down on Narvaez, who took the biggest win of his career. Simon Clarke rounded out the day's podium in third place.

“I’m really happy. In the last days, I tried to get into the breakaway but it was too difficult and the peloton was too strong. Today it was again the same but I was able to get up the road and I’m so happy to win from the break.\n \n“After what happened with Geraint (Thomas) it was difficult for everyone. But the spirit is there every day and I know I have been happy with my spirit. We’ve been fighting every day and finally today I did it!" Narvaez said.

João Almeida (Deceuninck - QuickStep) spent his 10th day in the maglia rosa, and will wear it again tomorrow with the same lead. The Portugese rider leads Wilco Kelderman in the overall by 34 seconds. Pello Bilbao remains in third at 43 second.

“I have to say that it was another hard stage. We spent almost six hours in the saddle, had a lot of rain and low temperatures, but at the end of the day we retained the pink jersey, which is the most important thing. Despite everything this stage threw at us, I was very calm because I knew there was such a strong and committed team around me, an amazing bunch of guys who gave everything out there. Having such a great squad around me motivated me to do my best and keep the jersey for as long as possible. I never thought I would wear it for so many days when I pulled it on for the first time and I’m happy that I could do it for more than a week”, said Almeida after the race.\n
