Ganna wins opening stage of the Giro
Newly crowned world time trial champion Filippo Ganna (Team Ineos Grenadiers) crushed the opening time trial of the 2020 Giro d'Italia, winning the 15.1km race against the clock 22 seconds ahead of João Almeida (Deceuninck - Quick - Step) and Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates).
“I knew I was one of the favorites, but I tried to stay calm and focused," said Ganna, who completed the course with a time of 15:24. "We made it. What a fantastic result and what a thrill to wear the Maglia Rosa on my first Giro. It is a good omen for the rest of the race."
Ganna will wear the pink jersey heading into the second stage of the Giro. The 24-year-old is also in the lead of the best young rider competition. Rick Zabel (Israel Start Up Nation) was the fasted up the early climb to take the Maglia Azzurra.
In the GC battle, Geraint Thomas put in an excellent time to finish fourth, 23 seconds off his Ineos teammate's pace. Yates finished 17th, 49 seconds down. In a shocking turn of events, Tour de France stage winner, and contender for the Giro overall, Miguel Angel Lopez crashed just before the second intermediate split and had to be taken to the hospital.
Tomorrow's stage is a 149km foray from Alcamo to Agrigento. It features two category 4 climbs and an uphill finish.
