Kämna solos to victory
Lennard Kämna timed a late attack out of the breakaway to perfection and won the penultimate stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné today. The German outclimbed his breakaway companions on the last ascent to Megève to finish 40 seconds ahead of David de la Cruz (UAE) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step).
“I want to say I’m sorry for all the guys who crashed today,” said David de la Cruz (UAE Team Emirates), who claimed enough KOM points to take the polka dot jersey. “I wish them a good recovery. Regarding myself, I don’t feel bad because I did my best in the final climb. The winner was better than me and congratulations to him. I chased the KOM points to keep the jersey on Davide Formolo’s shoulders and then I went for myself. The focus, in the end, was about the stage win, I was close but it wasn’t good enough. Tomorrow is gonna be another hard day. We have to go all-in, see if we can keep the jersey, see what we can do with Tadej (Pogacar) and maybe win the stage.”
Despite crashing mid-stage, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) retained the leader’s jersey after finishing with his closest rivals.
Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) instigated the break of the day, taking 14 riders with him on the first KOM climb Col de Plan Bois: Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana Pro Team), Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe), Michal Kwiatkowski and Dylan van Baarle (Team Ineos), Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), David de la Cruz (UAE Team Emirates), Marc Soler (Movistar Team), Jack Haig (Mitchelton-Scott), Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo), Marc Hirschi (Trek-Segafredo), Matej Mohoric and Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-McLaren), Nicolas Edet (Cofidis) and Fausto Masnada (CCC Team).
Jumbo Visma went to the front of the proceedings and kept the large breakaway at around three to four minutes along the 153.5km route. Along the way, De la Cruz collected 27 KOM points, taking the lead ahead of his teammate and yesterday’s stage winner Davide Formolo.
The mountainous route whittled away the break and the peloton, by the time the leaders hit the final climb, there were only seven left at the front. Alaphilippe, Masnada, Elissonde, Kwiatkowski, Haig, Kämna, De La Cruz and Mohoric.
Kenny Elissonde attacked with 7.4km left to the finish, and was joined by De la Cruz a few kilometres later. Kämna found a second wind to catch and pass the duo with three kilometres to go.
