Formolo solos to victory in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville
Davide Formolo (UAE Team Emirates) took victory on stage 3 of the Critérium du Dauphiné after an impressive solo run 66km from the finish line in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville. The Italian champion held off a looming reduced field, finishing 33 seconds ahead of race leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ).
"I restarted the 2020 season with a pretty good race at the Strade Bianche,” Formolo said. “I felt a little down after Milano-Sanremo. But today we deserved it. We worked hard and I’m delighted to take this victory. At the bottom of La Madeleine, we only had 3 minutes, which was not enough, so I told myself I had to try to open the gap. I was alone for the 10km valley before the final climb. It was really hard, I lost energy. The last climb was up and down all of the time so it was not enough to make differences from the break. I had to attack on La Madeleine and pray to make it to the finish.”
Roglic remains in the yellow leader’s jersey, 14 seconds ahead of Pinot and 20 seconds in front of Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe).
"It was another hard day, with hard racing,” Roglic said. “We show again we are a strong team and it was a good day in the end for us. The goal was to control. We could have let a bigger break go but, in the end, we had to go fast because Formolo wasn't 15' down on GC but closer. We can expect two hard days this weekend. We need to keep the focus on the whole team and do our job. We can be confident about how strong we are."
Daniel Oss (Bora-Hansgrohe), Bob Jungels (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Pierre Latour (AG2R-La Mondiale), Davide Formolo (UAE Team Emirates), Christopher Juul Jensen (Mitchelton-Scott), Soren Kragh Andersen and Jasha Sütterlin (Team Sunweb), Guy Niv (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Maxime Chevalier (B&B Hotels-Vital Concept) were the break of the day, and were held to a three minute and 30 second gap by Jumbo Visma.
When the break hit the HC categorized Col de la Madeleine, Formolo and Latour quickly dropped the rest of their breakaway companions, and eventually, Formolo went clear. He continued to hold his advantage on the Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, despite Jumbo Visma’s train eating into his advantage.
In the final metres, Formolo looked back to see he was still safe from being caught, and 30 seconds later Roglic powered away from what was left of the GC group to collect second and a few seconds time bonus.
