Roglic wins stage 2

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) took over the yellow leaders jersey from his teammate Wout van Aert in commanding fashion on stage 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné, when the Slovenian powerhouse attacked on the last kilometre of the formidable col de Porte. Roglic could not be contained, and came across the line a handful of seconds ahead of Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe).

“It’s a great result for our team,” Roglic said. “Once again, we show that we prepared right. The whole team did a really great job, and I’m happy to finish on top again. We all knew about the hard climb at the finish, and we started to control the race from the beginning. The guys are really strong, so they managed it perfectly, and in the end, I was happy to be able to win this. Egan [Bernal] is the Tour de France winner, so he’s the strongest or one of the strongest. But everyone is very prepared, and you have to be the best in the end. It was quite a strange season. I’m happy with every race I can do this year, and I’m really happy with the way it’s going.”

At the start of stage 2 in Vienne, it didn’t take long for the break of the day to form.

Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ), Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Jasha Sütterlin (Team Sunweb), Ben O’Connor (NTT Pro Cycling), Jérôme Cousin and Geoffrey Soupe (Total Direct Energie), Michael Schär (CCC Team) and Fabien Doubey (Circus-Wanty Gobert) were the eight to escape, and quickly gained an advantage of around three minutes.

Jumbo Visma quickly took up the helm at the front of the peloton and locked in the three minute advantage as the leaders cleared the first climbs, where Schär scooped up more points to keep him safely in the KOM jersey for stage 3.

As the race wore on and the riders crept closer to the main contention points, Jumbo Visma increased the tempo with help from yesterday’s stage winner, super domestic van Aert. The cols wore down everyone in the breakaway except for Armirail, who fought on until he was caught on the HC classified col de Porte, the last climb of the day.

Ineos gained control on the col as crunch time began with 12 km to go, but the Bernal couldn't capitalize on their work, and was quickly drawn back in by Jumbo Visma's Sepp Kuss after an attempt at attacking. Roglic countered with 1km to go, and no one could answer.
