Race Recap
Arndt wins stage 8
Nikias Arndt (Team Sunweb) won stage 8 of the Vuelta a Espana, sprinting out of the breakaway after spending the day in a 21-man move in Catalunya. Alexander Aranburu (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Tosh van der Sande (Lotto Soudal) finished second and third, respectively.
The day also resulted in the red jersey changing hands yet again, this time to Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), who also made the break, which ended up coming across the line more than nine minutes ahead of the peloton. Astana was content with Miguel Ángel López giving up the jersey responsibilities yet again.
Edet is now leading the overall by 2 minutes and 21 seconds ahead of Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Merida). López dropped to third at three minutes and 31 seconds.
On a day that started out under hot and sunny skies and ended in a rainstorm, it took around 30 kilometres before a solid breakaway established on the rolling intro to the stage.
The names in the breakaway included: Nicolas Edet (COF), Dylan Teuns (TBM), Carl Fredrik Hagen (LTS), Peter Stetina (TFS), David De La Cruz (INS), Ruben Guerreiro (TKA), Luis León Sánchez (AST), Jesús Herrada (COF), Martijn Tusveld (SUN), Sergio Henao (UAD), Tosh Van Der Sande (LTS), Edvald Boasson Hagen (TDD), Zdenek Štybar (DQT), Jonas Koch (CCC), Tobias Ludvigsson (GFC), Nikias Arndt (SUN), Silvan Dillier (ALM), Fernando Barceló (EUS), Alex Aranburu (CJR), Jorge Arcas (MOV) and Jonathan Lastra (CJR).
The large group was allotted a maximum of six minutes, with Astana and Jumbo Visma more interested in saving their energy for stage 9 mountain test.
The only KOM of the day dictated most of the day’s action. The Category 2 Puerto de Monserrat start with 33km to go, and Stetina was the first to attack. Barceló was the only rider to respond and caught the American right before the summit. Herrada was the next to make a move, but by then the breakaway was close enough to catch back up before the started the descent.
It was a tricky and wet descent and by the time it flattened out, there was 10km left. The break came all together after the downhill, and Tusveld attempted an attack around a roundabout but slipped on the wet roads.
It ended up being a sprint amongst the breakaway, and Arndt timed his effort perfectly to take the win. \n
