Madrazo wins stage 5 of the Vuelta a Espana
Angel Madrazo (Burgos-BH) flipped the script on stage 5 of the Vuelta a Espana after a late attack on his breakaway companions, teammate Jetse Bol and José Herrada (Cofidis) turned into a success story for the Burgos-BH king of the mountains leader.
Madrazo, who yo-yoed back and forth from the lead group consistently on the last climb of the Alto de Javalambre, somehow found his second wind when it counted, to which the others couldn’t respond.
Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) took back the red jersey after a dominating attack with three kilometres to go in the stage, and Nicholas Roche couldn’t respond. Lopez now leads GC by 14 seconds ahead of Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma). Nario Quintana (Movistar) is third at 23 seconds.
It was a long day for Bol, Madrazo and Herrada, who took off out of the peloton after just 11km into the 170 km stage. Herrada bridged across, and they gained a healthy lead of almost 11 minutes over the course of the stage from Valencia to Aragon. In it to collect king of the mountains points, Madrazo scooped up maximum points at Puerto de Alcublas and Alto Fuente de Rubielos.
In the peloton, there was little activity save for Team Sunweb setting a sleepy pace at the front.
With 30 kilometres to go, things began to heat up before the final climb. Jumbo Visma and Astana emerged at the front, along with Hugh Carthy from EF Education First to inject some pace quickly dislodge the majority of the peloton, leaving only the GC favorites in the chase group behind the three leaders. \n
