Bennett wins in Alicante

Irish powerhouse Sam Bennett took victory on the third stage of the Vuelta a Espana today, edging out Edward Theuns (Trek-Segafredo) and Luka Mezgec (Mitchelton-Scott) in a bunch gallop to the resort town of Alicante.

Nicolas Roche (Team Sunweb) crossed the line safely to remain in the red jersey as the overall leader of the Vuelta a Espana after claiming second on yesterday’s stage.

Stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana was a more standard affair from Ibi to Alicante, after the excitement of the first two stages, as the peloton settled into the 188 km flat stage with a determined focus on the sprinters.

King of the Mountains leader Ángel Madrazo, Óscar Cabedo, and Euskadi-Murias’ Héctor Sáez took off from the starting gun and quickly gained a six-minute advantage, as the peloton showed no interest in the trio in the early parts of the race.

Madrazo reached the Puerto de Biar, the first of the KOMs, first to further his lead in the KOM competition.

The peloton was looming on the breakaway on the second climb, however, and Madrazo barely got over the top ahead of an attacking Ruben Guerreiro (Katusha-Alpecin), who passed him on the descent.

It was altogether on the pointy end of the stage, and with 20 km to go, Sergio Higuita (EF Education First) took the intermediate sprint. From there, it was the Jumbo-Visma and Movistar show into the finale. Sunweb took over closer to the finish for Phil Bauhaus. Bennett picked Theuns’ wheel, which was the right move.
