The 2019 Vuelta a España is set to be one of the most compelling editions of the Spanish grand tour in recent memory, with a stellar cast of riders and a route that promises to test the very best climbers and time trialists in the peloton.
The race gets underway in Torrevieja with a team time trial, giving the general classification contenders an early opportunity to gain or lose valuable seconds before the road stages begin in earnest. From there the race winds its way through some of the most dramatic landscapes on the Iberian Peninsula, taking in the volcanic roads of Catalonia, the punishing climbs of Andalusia, and the iconic ascents of the Asturian mountains before concluding with a traditional finale in Madrid.
Defending champion Simon Yates of Mitchelton-Scott arrives in Spain looking to improve on his 2018 victory, though he will face fierce opposition from a number of rivals who believe this edition suits their particular strengths. Primoz Roglic of Team Jumbo-Visma comes into the race as one of the favourites following a string of impressive results throughout the season, and the Slovenian's combination of climbing ability and time trial prowess makes him a serious threat for overall honours.
Alejandro Valverde will carry enormous home support as he looks to claim a maiden Vuelta title late in his distinguished career, while Nairo Quintana represents another danger for the pure climbers given how well the Colombian has historically performed on Spanish roads.
The mountain stages are genuinely fearsome, with summit finishes at La Cubilla, the Lago de Covadonga, and the Plataforma de Gredos among the key battlegrounds where the overall classification could be decided. The time trial stage on the penultimate day looms as a potential decider, particularly if Roglic finds himself within striking distance of the jersey at that point.
Expect attacks, drama, and a Vuelta that lives up to its reputation as the most unpredictable and entertaining of the three grand tours.
