2019 Tour of Utah Stage 4 Results & Recap
Stage 4 of the 2019 Tour of Utah is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.

Canola on top at Salt Lake City circuit race
For the second time in three years, Marco Canola scored a huge win in the shadow of the Utah State Capital. The 30-year-old Italian rider bided his time in the final kilometer of stage 4 of the 2019 Tour of Utah. Canola was part of a massive last-minute swarm that quashed the hopes of a four-man breakaway as the field charged up a brutal uphill finish. Canola and sprint rival Travis McCabe (Worthy Brewing) blew past James Piccoli (Elevate KHS) to go head to head for the finale to close out a dramatic rollercoaster day of racing.
With the GC safely in the hands of Ben Hermans and his Israel Cycling Academy team, the peloton rolled from the starting line fully anticipating a sprint finish. However, that did not dissuade several handfuls of riders from working their way into a number of breakaways with the hopes of rewriting the day’s script. Among them were local favorite T.J. Eisenhart (Arapahoe Hincapie), Alex Hoehn (Aevolo), Alex Howes (EF Education First), and Joao Almeida (Hagens Berman Axeon).
McCabe and the rest of his squad kept a close watch on the proceedings throughout the event, knowing full well that a catch was probably still the most likely outcome. The Worthy Pro Cycling sprinter also captured the first two intermediate sprints which propelled him into the Utah Sports Commission jersey by a healthy margin, 18 points ahead of Canola.
The race changed hands continually, that didn’t prevent Brayden McCormack from charging for the finish line prematurely with one lap to go, and posting up as he crossed the line. Once he realized his mistake, however, it was too late and the remainder of the field rolled past him. Then it was Almeida’s turn to through in an effort.
Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy) finished safely just inside the top 10 to retain his lead in the GC. Alex Howes (EF Education First Pro Cycling) will stay in the KOM jersey and Travis Mccabe (Worthy Pro Cycling) takes over the sprint jersey, a consultation for being pipped on the line by Canola. JoĂŁo Almeida (Hagens Berman Axeon) remains as the best young rider and Bernat Font Mas (303 Project) takes the fan favorite jersey for "most inspiring comeback." Hayden Mccormick (Team BridgeLane) was awarded the most aggressive jersey.
