Race Recap
Impey sprints to stage 4 win
Tour Down Under’s defending champion Daryl Impey took stage 4 by the reigns and outsprinted race leader Paddy Bevin (CCC) after 129 kilometres of racing from Unley to Campbelltown. Astana’s Luis León Sánchez finished third after an early bid to the line was overtaken by Impey and Bevin.
The result put Impey into second place overall by seven seconds, and Sanchez bumped up to third at 11 seconds back.
After the official start, a breakaway immediately formed that featured Thomas de Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Hermann Pernsteiner (Bahrain-Merida), Miles Scotson (Groupama-FDJ), Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R La Mondiale), Jasha Sütterlin (Movistar) and Nicholas White (UniSA-Australia). The group kept up a pace that garnered a five-minute advantage at times, but the peloton was all business today, and quickly brought down their lead when it mattered – right before the infamous Corkscrew climb.
Birthday boy Scotson attempted to attack before the base to get a head start, but it didn’t take long before the peloton caught the breakaway, which had been off the front for 121 kilometres.
GC favorites George Bennett (Jumbo-Visma), Wout Poels (Sky), Mike Woods (EF Education First), and Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) launched their attacks when the gradient kicked up and went over the summit together, but they couldn’t make it stick and about 20 riders went down the descent into Campbelltown together.
In the closing metres, Sánchez wound up his sprint early, Bevin passed by, but Impey had enough in the tank to win by about a wheel. \n
