Welcome to our live coverage of Stage 4 of the 2019 Tour Down Under! Our live profile and commentary are below, followed by a preview of the technical aspects of the route.
Course Preview
At 129.2 kilometres, the Tour Down Under's 4th stage travels from Unley to Campbelltown. The race is mostly played out on rolling roads, but the finale takes in a punchy climb that could hurt GC contenders. Corkscrew Road features steepest ramps of up to 15%, while the hill is crested with 5.7 kilometres remaining.
Unley is a regular host in the Tour Down Under. Since 2008 a stage starts in Adelaide’s southern suburb. This time the riders head up Route B33 through the Adelaide Hills and move through Stirling before two intermediate sprints in Echunga. The race continues to historical Hahndorf and Mount Barker and then swings up back through the hills. Following passages through Lobethal and Cudlee Creek, the riders face the Corkscrew climb and a technical downhill finish into Campbelltown.
The finale is almost a copy of 2016 when Richie Porte attacked on the 3.7 kilometres at 6.4% up Corkscrew Road. Sergio Henao and Michael Woods counter-attacked before they were first to crest. In the descent, to Campbelltown, they were tracked down by a group of GC contenders before Simon Gerrans sprinted to victory ahead of Rohan Dennis and Michael Woods. Edition 2014 also saw this finale with Cadel Evans attacking at the Corkscrew climb. The now retired former Tour de France winner soloed to the win.
The first three riders on the line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints (at kilometre 29.8 and kilometre 58.7) come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
The 4th stage of the 2019 Tour Down Under starts at 11:00 and the finish is expected around 14:24 – both local times.\n
