\nHugh Carthy (ED1) won the final day of the Tour de Suisse after attacking in the early moments of the 101 km queen stage, and riding solo all the way to the line. The 24-year-old British rider celebrated the biggest victory of his career by tapping the EF Education First logo on his chest while rolling over the finish line more than a minute ahead of Rohan Dennis (Bahrain Merida).

“On the first climb I knew the legs, body and head was good,” Carthy said in his team’s release. “It was just a time trial – the same for everybody – just one effort per climb. You just have to believe you can do it. “Two days ago on the stage to San Gottardo I was terrible. My head, legs and body were tired, and I just wanted to be on holiday and finish the first part of the season. Yesterday in the time trial the legs were better. Today it was one last chance and I wanted to finish on a high before the holidays.”

Rolling over the HC categorized Nufenen-, Gotthard- and Furka-pass, Carthy also scooped up enough KOM points to claim the king of the mountains jersey.

Behind, Egan Bernal played it safe to win the Tour de Suisse by 19 seconds over Dennis. The Colombian glued himself to the Australian’s wheel all the way to Goms, finishing behind Dennis for third place on the day. Patrick Konrad (BOH) held on to third place overall despite threats from Jan Hirt (Astana) and Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal).

“It’s one of the biggest races that I’ve won. I’m really happy and it gives me a lot of confidence for the next races,” Bernal said. “Just before the race I had a big crash and I could not go to the Giro. So to come here and to win is really nice for me and the team.”
