Race Recap
Jumbo Visma’s Antwan Tolhoek launched a strong attack on the final climb of the Flumserberg to win stage 6 of the Tour of Switzerland. The 25-year-old Dutch phenom held off a charging Egan Bernal (INS) to take his first World Tour win.
"Bernal had beaten me at the end of a similar stage in last year’s Tour of California. This time, I’m glad that I could celebrate my first professional victory," Tolhoek said.
Bernal’s move bumped him into first place in the overall classification, 12 seconds ahead of stage 1 winner Rohan Dennis (Bahrain Merida). Patrick Konrad (Bora-hansgrohe) is third at 29 seconds. \n"I waited for the best moment for my attack in the peloton. My legs were hurting, but I knew I had to grab my chance," Bernal said. "There are still some tough stages to cover until Sunday. My teammates and I will work hard to defend my leader’s jersey."
The shortest stage of the tour, the 120 kilometre route was the first to test the legs of the mountain goats. A group of 25 riders broke away after 20 kilometres of attacks. The names off the front were: Matteo Trentin (MTS), Kévin Geniets (GFC), Lluís Mas (MOV), Aurélien Paret-Peintre (ALM), François Bidard (ALM), Robert Stannard (MTS), Nikias Arndt (SUN), Stan Dewulf (LTS), Patrick Bevin (CCC), Matej Mohoric (TBM), Daniel Oss (BOH), Simon Pellaud (SUI), Antwan Tolhoek (TJV), Rui Costa (UAD), Nathan Haas (TKA), Gian Friesecke (SUI), Jasper Stuyven (TFS), Benjamin King (TDD), Alexander Kristoff (UAD), Pim Ligthart (TDE), Colin Joyce (RLY), Tosh Van Der Sande (LTS), Tom Scully (EF1), Claudio Imhof (SUI) and Bert-Jan Lindeman (TJV).
They stayed together until the first classified climb, when the king of the mountains leader Imhof attacked, along with Joyce and Trentin. The three gained an advantage of 30 seconds before Joyce and Trentin returned to the chase group in preparation for the fireworks on the final climb.
Imhof and the rest of the chase group were caught on the final climb, when the GC favorites took over. Tolhoek launched his move with five kilometres to go, and held off a chasing Bernal to the finish.
