Race Recap

Elia Viviani went two for two on stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, capitalizing on a perfect lead from his Deceuninck-Quick-Step squad to sprint to victory in front of race leader Peter Sagan (BOH). Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) took third.

"In the end, my job wasn’t difficult,” Viviani said. “My teammates did a perfect lead out for me. The mission for my teammates was to bring me into the final corner in first or second position. They accomplished that task to perfection. The quality of my teammates is one of the reasons why I feel so good in this team. There is no better preparation for the Tour de France.”

After the 177 kilometre stage, the last suited for the sprinters before the mountains hit tomorrow, Sagan has extended his lead in the overall competition. He now leads Michael Matthews (SUN) by 14 seconds. Kasper Asgreen (DQS) is third at 21 seconds. However, we can expect a shakeup in GC on tomorrow’s stage.

"Today was the last stage of this year's Tour de Suisse with a finish for the sprinters and we would have liked to win it,” Sagan said in the team’s press release. “Once again, I'd like to thank all my teammates for the dedication and effort they put to control the race, protect me and place me for the sprint. I was right behind Viviani in the last left corner, but he managed to stay ahead of me until the finish line. I think I can be satisfied with what I achieved so far in this Tour de Suisse and with the performance of our team."

At the start of the day, Swiss national TT champion Stefan KĂĽng (GFC) joined the breakaway move with Fabien Grellier (TDE) and Matej Mohoric (TBM). The trio spent most of the day off the front with a gap of about three minutes. On the category two climb during the latter part of the stage, Kung and Grellier lost contact with Mohoric, who forged ahead alone until eventually his imminent catch with 15 kilometres to go. \n
