Race Recap

Peter Sagan took his 17 career Tour de Suisse win today on the third stage from Flamatt to Murten. Elia Viviani (DQT) claimed second and John Degenkolb (TFS) was third.

“I knew that I had to be in front at 200 metres from the finish. I got there and from that point on it was easy,” Sagan said. “A technically difficult finish like this one is perfect for me.”

Sagan’s dominating result bumped him up into the leaders jersey, 10 seconds ahead of Kasper Asgreen (DQT). Winner of the first stage, Rohan Dennis sits third at 11 seconds.

“It’s a nice reward for me,” Sagan said. “We will try to defend the jersey during the upcoming days, but surely not until the end of the Tour de Suisse.”

The day’s 162 kilometre race saw a group of four make an escape 19 kilometres into the fairly flat stage. Bert-Jan Lindemann (TVJ), Willem Jakobus Smit (TKA), Ryan Anderson (RLY) and Simon Pellaud from the Swiss national team. The breakaway spent the majority of the race off the front, however, the sprinters' teams weren’t about to let another opportunity for a stage win slip away, like they did yesterday, and kept the four on a tight leash. The maximum advantage was 3:40 and the four riders were eventually brought back with about 10 km to go. Pellaud was the final rider to relent to the peloton's pace.

Tomorrow’s stage is another fairly rolling day, with a category 2 climb midway through the 164 km route. The downhill finish will be ideal for Sagan to keep his jersey and perhaps take another win. \n
