Luis León Sánchez (AST) attacked 12 kilometres from the line in Langnau im Emmental to claim victory on the second stage of the Tour de Suisse. The move upset many of the sprinters' teams, who weren’t able to recover in time to chase down the experienced Astana rider.

Kasper Asgreen (DQT) took over the race lead from Rohan Dennis by less than a second. Winning the bunch sprint for second, Peter Sagan (BOH) has moved up to seventh place.

The second day of the Tour de Suisse was 156 kilometre race with three circuits around Langnau. At the start, Claudio Imhof (SUI), Gavin Mannion (RLY), Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (CCC) and Fabien Grellier (TDE) took off, however, Imhof was quick to attack his breakaway companions and go ahead solo.

For a while, Imhof was the virtual leader on the road. His move was awarded with the king of the mountains jersey at the end of the stage.

Imhof went ahead to race 105km along before eventually being reeled back in by the Astana squad, who then sent Omar Fraile on the offensive while climbing the Schallenberg. The Spaniard was brought back on the descent, and his teammate, Sanchez, counter attacked.

“The team tactics were focused on trying to outrun the sprinters at the end of the stage,” Sanchez said.

The strategy worked. The sprinters’ team, especially Sunweb, were caught off guard and forced to chase, Sagan’s team of Bora-hansgrohe surprisingly absent from helping.
