2019 Tour de Suisse Stage 1 Results & Recap
Stage 1 of the 2019 Tour de Suisse is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
World time trial champion Rohan Dennis found a renewed sense of confidence in his abilities after winning the opening 9.5 km time trial in Langnau im Emmental and taking the Tour de Suisse leaders jersey for Bahrain Merida.
With a time of 10:50, Dennis barely pushed out Maciej Bodnar (Bora-Hansgrohe), who finished less than a second back on the Australian. Michael Matthews (Sunweb) claimed third place, just two seconds in arrears.
“I’m pleased that I finally managed to conclude my time without victories,” Dennis said after the stage. “Just like two years ago, I’ll probably wear the leader’s jersey no longer than one day. The time bonuses at the finish of the second stage favour my compatriot Michael Matthews.”
The opening day of the 82nd edition of the Tour de Suisse saw many GC favourites opting to start their time trial effort earlier in the day, as torrential rain was predicted later in the evening. Dennis was in the first wave of racers out of the gates, and set off to best Bodnar’s time. Last year’s stage winner, Stefan Kung, was in pursuit of Dennis. The Swiss national champion clocked the best intermediate time of the day, but faded in the latter part of the course to finish a disappointing ninth, nine seconds off the pace of the winner.
Dennis remained in the hot seat for the rest of the day, watching as one rider after the next started under stormy conditions and failed to come near to his time.
Tomorrow’s 159.5 km circuit race in the same town of Langnau is a lumpy one, with six KOMs on tap. \n
