The 2019 Tour de Suisse is set to be one of the most compelling editions of the Swiss stage race in recent years, with a strong field of riders gathering ahead of the Tour de France looking to sharpen their form on some of the most demanding roads in Europe. The race, which takes place across eight stages, will wind its way through the spectacular Swiss landscape, taking in mountain passes and technical terrain that will test every aspect of a rider's ability.
The race begins in Küsnacht and will serve as an important final tune-up for many of the sport's biggest names before the start of the Tour de France just weeks later. With several summit finishes and a demanding overall route, the general classification battle promises to be fierce, and there are few better places to gauge a rider's readiness for a grand tour than on the Swiss climbs.
Among the favourites for overall honours, Jakob Fuglsang arrives in strong form having already won the Critérium du Dauphiné earlier in the season, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous climbers in the peloton right now. The Astana leader will be confident of challenging strongly throughout the week.
Geraint Thomas, the defending Tour de France champion, is also expected to feature prominently as he builds toward his title defence, while Richie Porte, always a strong performer in Switzerland, will be looking to remind the peloton of his capabilities after some difficult recent seasons.
The mountain stages will be decisive, and the Swiss roads are unlikely to offer any easy days for those with ambitions at the top of the standings.
