Course Preview
Stage 17 in the Tour de France is a 206 kilometres race from Pont du Gard to Gap. A rolling to hilly route serves as a warm-up before the ensuing challenges in the Alps.
The race sets off near the Pont du Gard. This ancient Roman aqueduct crosses the Gardon River 25 kilometres northeast of Nîmes. The route moves through the Rhône valley and visits the famous Roman Theatre of Orange before continuing to Vaison-la-Romaine. The Col de la Sentinelle is crested under 10 kilometres to go. The climb is almost 6 kilometres and slopes at around 5%. As the Sentinelle stirs up the finale, a bunch sprint in Gap seems unlikely.
Gap is a regular host of the Tour de France. The last three stages ended in solo victories: Thor Hushovd (2011), Rui Costa (2013) and Rubén Plaza (2015).
